ULTRAMYST SPRAY GUN MAINTENANCE

Maintenance Instructions to Clean and Maintain your UltraMyst Spray Gun

Welcome to our UltraMyst Spray Gun Maintenance page!

This page contains videos and listed instructions to keep your UltraMyst Spray Gun in working order. We suggest first viewing our Airbrush and Spray Gun Cleaning page or our Airbrush Tanning Manual for tips and methods for daily spray gun cleaning. These steps should be taken as a last resort to daily general upkeep and cleaning of the spray gun, as individual parts can be fragile when removed and the gun can be tricky to put back together. We also recommend reading through these directions and viewing the videos before attempting any of these steps. If the airbrush still isn't working properly after attempting these steps, we will be happy to help you through our Customer Service link.

Routine Cleaning

It is best to perform these cleaning steps close to a sink or a small plastic pail to catch solution and water that will inevitably find its way out of the gun. If neither is available, even something as common as a 2 liter bottle or milk jug will suffice. For instruction purposes, we assume a sink is available.

1. We recommend first rinsing the gun, removing it from the compressor and washing it lightly under running water. Reattach the gun for the consecutive steps.

2. Fill the solution cup with water and spray into the sink until the liquid sprays clear.

This next step, called "back bubbling", is a very effective technique that is optional because of its difficulty. It can be tricky to do and it runs a risk of stabbing a finger on the spray gun needle but it is very efficient at loosening up built-up residue within the gun. To lessen the risk of pricking a finger, this step can be done using a wadded up tissue to form a cushion between your finger and the needle. There is also a possibility the bubbling action will cause the cup to overflow, so perform this step over a sink or large container.

3. Fill the spray gun cup with about 1 ounce of water. Pull back the trigger until the needle retracts within the gun and place a finger (optionally with "cushion" mentioned above) over the end of the gun to block the flow of air and water. This causes air to be forced back into the solution cup, producing bubbles with a boiling appearance. Perform this bubbling for a few seconds and replace the water and repeat if significant residue is freed.

4. For a more thorough cleaning, repeat Step 2 using airbrush cleaner instead of water.

Thorough Cleaning

Disassembly

Occasionally, the routine cleaning will not restore the spray gun to its optimal performance and a deep cleaning through a disassembly is necessary. For these steps, the brush, spanner wrench and optional filter that came with the gun (in a separate box within the UltraMyst package) is needed.

1. Rotate the cup counter-clockwise and remove it from the spray gun. If the cup proves too tight to remove by hand, use the "17" fitting spanner wrench fitting on the nut at the base of the cup, turning counter-clockwise to unscrew the cup loose.

We recommend the use of the optional filter mentioned in the next step. Though it is not required for the gun to function, it traps sediments and thick particles making cleaning easier.

2. Remove the optional filter. This can be easily done by inserting the cleaning brush slightly into the filter and retract, using the bristles of the brush to grasp the filter. Flush water through the filter until it is clean.

3. Rotate the needle cap counter-clockwise and remove it from the front of the spray gun.

4. Rotate the needle adjusting screw counter-clockwise until it pops out and remove from the back of the spray gun.

5. Remove the needle spring.

6. Pull out the needle.

7. Place the center hexagonal wrench fitting (marked "8") over the fluid nozzle and rotate counter-clockwise to remove the nozzle from the front of the gun.

After removing the fluid nozzle, a small plastic o-ring with 4 holes is viewable inside the gun. Typically, this will not need to be removed for cleaning, but if it falls out it is important to note that this o-ring should be replaced with the grove side towards the inside of the gun.

8. Using the supplied brush and water or airbrush cleaner, use a twisting motion to scrub out the two channels where the cup and the nozzle attach.

Reassembly

Before starting the reassembly steps, check that the o-ring is properly inserted with the groove side facing inward. If it hasn't fallen out or been removed in the disassembly steps, it should already be in this position.

1. Screw the nozzle onto the spray gun by hand with a clockwise rotation. Being careful not to apply excessive force, use the "8" fitting on the spanner wrench to snugly tighten the nozzle.

2. Before attempting to reinsert the needle, note that there is a hole in the bottom pin of the trigger. This hole needs to be aligned horizontally with the solution flow knob and if necessary, the hole can be rotated around to its correct position using the pin ends. Once properly aligned, insert the needle until the tip is barely protruding through the nozzle cap.

3. Reattach the needle cap by rotating it clockwise onto the front of the gun.

4. Replace the spring, placing it over the needle.

5. Having a firm hold on the gun, position the needle adjusting screw over the spring until the screw contacts the spray gun body. Rotate the screw clockwise and reattach it to the gun, continuing until it won't advance any further - this may require some force. To get the needle adjusting screw approximately to its normal spray setting, rotate the screw counter-clockwise about 3 revolutions.

6. Replace the optional filter with the narrow end inserted first (again, it is recommended to use this filter.)

7. Reattach the solution cup with a clockwise motion. The spray gun should now be completely reassembled and ready for use.
