Sun Protection Facts

The ABC’s of sun protection is something that has been embedded in our minds every time we go to the beach or pool. The sun might feel wonderful, but too much exposure can cause irreversible damage to your skin in the years to come. Sun protection is crucial, as it leads to better health and lasting beauty.

Here are a few facts and tips to help you find the most effective sun protection for your skin.

Sunscreen

Make sure to choose a sunscreen that provides protection for both UVA and UVB rays, called ‘broad spectrum’. These rays can have harmful effects to your body, UVA rays can affect your immune system and UVB rays can burn your skin. Sunscreen can also be found in lots of different facial makeup- even lipstick.

Clothing

Another way to help prevent sun exposure is by wearing head gear and apparel. The ideal clothing for sun protection is long sleeve shirt or maxi dress. Breathable, vented clothing is made to battle sun exposure. Although long sleeves don’t seem appealing on a hot day, there are swimsuits that come in sun-protective styles. Don’t forget to wear your shades…your eyes need protection too!

Timing

You can always try to avoid the sun completely, but that’s not very realistic. It’s important to stay out of the sun during its most powerful peak hours to avoid the most radiation as possible between the hours of 10:00am - 4:00pm. It doesn't matter if it’s cloudy out, the sun’s rays are powerful enough to burn your skin, even on a gloomy day.
